Mushira: Allocation of Parliamentary Seats to Women a Step Forward, Women Must Face Attempts to Return to Dark Ages

Tuesday, June 16, 2009

Mushira Khattab, Minister of State for Family and Population, has praised the decision to allocate 64 seats to women in the People's Assembly. She thanked President Mubarak for this "step forward", which she said will have the best possible impact on Egypt's future.

Speaking to the press yesterday, she called on Egyptian women to ward off what she described as "attempts to impose backward restrictions on them, take them back to the dark ages and restrain their will."

She also called on them to exercise their rights as guaranteed by divine religions, laws and constitutions.

She said this was a further positive step that added to the efforts made by Egyptian women. She affirmed that these endeavors have been backed by the First Lady Suzanne Mubarak and added that women must prove their worthiness and look forward to achieving further progress.

In another context, the Minister said that over the 50 days since her ministry was set up she has been focusing on the population issue, and results show that their number is still on the rise.

She said this was leading Egypt to an unsafe territory.

She delivered a speech at the first forum to follow up on population and family issues, which kicked off in the Governorate of 6th of October on Sunday.

"The demographic estimates issued in March 2009 revealed that Egypt's population in 2009 has reached 82,999,000 people, while this figure was expected to rise as far as 78,200,000" she said.

"Egypt's population is expected to reach 129,533,000 inhabitants in 2050 instead of 121,219,000" she added, pointing out that the strategic plan on family planning (two children for each family) can be effectively carried out between 2035 and 2040 rather than in 2017.
