Al-Azhar Refuses to Intervene in Coptic Personal Status Law

Thursday, June 25, 2009

In its yesterday's meeting under Al-Azhar Grand Sheikh Mohamed Sayed Tantawi, the Islamic Research Academy refused to intervene to amend the Coptic personal status law.

The academy members confirmed that Al-Azhar rejected a request by Dr. Nabil Luka Bibawi, a member of the Shura Council, calling on the Islamic religious establishment, represented in Al-Azhar, to amend the Coptic personal status law. The members said Al-Azhar does not have the competence to do so.

The academy also rejected the draft law proposed by Dr. Georgette Qellini, a member of the People's Assembly, to cancel fathers' custody over children if they failed to spend on them.

Strangely enough, the academy did not discuss the possibility of postponing Hajj and Umrah this year due to the spread of swine flu.
